Vehicle Overview

The Sealion 05 EV is a compact all-electric SUV under BYD's Ocean Series, officially launched on 20 April 2026. Built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo with CTB (Cell-to-Body) structural integration technology, the new EV is positioned as an "Urban Smart Fun SUV". The Sealion 05 EV is offered in three variants, with official retail prices ranging from RM119,900 to RM145,900. Serving as a core pillar for the Ocean Series in the RM100,000 to RM150,000 compact SUV segment, the Sealion 05 EV is backed by key technologies such as the second-generation Blade Battery, flash charging, and advanced smart driving, catering to young first-time buyers and urban families looking for long range, strong value for money, and a tech-forward experience.

Design Language

The Sealion 05 EV adopts BYD's latest "Ocean Aesthetics" design language. Up front, a closed-off EV-specific grille is paired with full-width wave-style LED headlamp clusters and sharp C-shaped contours, delivering a futuristic visual impact. The front lower bumper features angular triangular air ducts, further accentuating its sporty stance. Along the sides, the "Ocean Leaping" character line is matched with semi-flush door handles, 18-inch aero wheels, and a floating roof, further optimising aerodynamic efficiency. Around the back, full-width "Wave Dynamic" LED tail lamps feature an illuminated BYD emblem. Dimensions-wise, it measures 4,620 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,630 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,770 mm. Six trendy exterior colours are available: Coral Orange, Muchuan Green, Seashell Pink, Jun Porcelain Grey, Sea White, and Warm Sun White.

Inside, the Sealion 05 EV adopts a wraparound Ocean Rhythm cabin design. The interior is available in two colourways: Almond Beige and Twilight Blue. Mid-to-high-spec variants come equipped with a 15.6-inch rotating floating central infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch full digital instrument cluster. Gear selection is handled via a column-mounted electronic stalk, giving the centre console a cleaner, uncluttered layout. Over 30 clever storage compartments are dotted across the cabin, with the front console featuring a 50W wireless charging pad and dual cupholders. Other highlights include a massive panoramic glass roof with a power sunblind, 127-colour ambient lighting, and an eight-speaker Dirac sound system.

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the Sealion 05 EV is a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, available in two outputs: 200 kW and 240 kW. The 240 kW variant develops 270 Nm of peak torque, enabling a century sprint (0-100 km/h) in as brisk as 5.9 seconds. Energy is stored in BYD's second-generation Blade Battery across the range, offered in 57.545 kWh and 68.547 kWh capacities, providing CLTC-rated electric driving ranges of 540 km and 630 km respectively. Charging-wise, the Sealion 05 EV features the brand's latest flash charging tech, capable of achieving a "5-minute quick top-up, 9-minute full charge" at ambient temperatures, with low-temperature conditions adding just 3 minutes. Top speed is capped at 180 km/h.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the Sealion 05 EV runs a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, riding on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link (five-link) independent suspension setup. Higher variants feature the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System, which dynamically adjusts suspension damping in real time to balance agile handling with ride comfort. Additionally, the EV model comes equipped with the iTAC 2.0 (intelligence Torque Adaptation Control) system, significantly improving driving stability and safety in challenging conditions like wet, slippery roads. It is also fitted with a high-speed tyre blowout stability control system for added peace of mind. Rolling stock consists of 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels wrapped in 235/50 R18 tyres.

Cabin and Features

On the infotainment front, the Sealion 05 EV packs the DiLink 150 high-end intelligent cockpit, featuring an upgraded 15.6-inch HD touchscreen with a fresh UI design. The system integrates the Deepseek AI large model, offering deeply customised AutoNavi navigation, four-zone voice command recognition, multi-device interconnectivity, connected car services, OTA software updates, and 10 preset scenario modes. For passenger comfort, the powered front seats feature heating and ventilation, alongside a simulated zero-gravity mode for the front passenger. Also included are an onboard smart cooling/heating fridge (-6°C to 50°C) and a 50W wireless smartphone charging pad, while the EV also benefits from a 110-litre front boot (frunk). Boot space is rated at 600 litres, expandable further via 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Active safety and driver assistance represent another key selling point. The entire range comes standard with the "Eye of the Gods C" Level 2 ADAS suite, supported by an advanced sensor suite comprising five millimetre-wave radars, 12 HD cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Available ADAS capabilities include full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and automated parking. The Intelligent Navigation variant can be optioned with the "Eye of the Gods B" LiDAR-equipped package (DiPilot 300) for RM9,900. This upgrade adds a roof-mounted LiDAR unit, unlocking advanced features like City Navigation on Autopilot (CNOA), Highway Navigation on Autopilot (HNOA), Emergency Steering Assist (ESA), all-scenario obstacle avoidance and yielding, as well as roundabout navigation. Passive safety is well covered with seven airbags fitted as standard, built around a high-rigidity steel-aluminium hybrid body shell with hot-stamped steel reinforcing key structural zones.

Market Performance and Reception

The Sealion 05 EV made an impressive market debut following its launch, recording monthly sales of around 5,140 units in April 2026, with media observers noting that it quickly became a heavyweight pillar in BYD's SUV lineup. In terms of customer reception, owners have widely praised its sleek styling, generous interior room (with the 2,770 mm wheelbase yielding ample rear legroom), and well-rounded package, earning high marks for running costs, overall value, and aesthetics. On the flip side, some early owners reported minor teething issues with body trim accessories and electricals, while dealership sales experiences have room for improvement. While there is still a volume gap compared to its Song PLUS stablemate, which regularly clocks over 20,000 units monthly, the Sealion 05 EV's compelling recipe of the "second-gen Blade Battery + flash charging + Eye of the Gods ADAS + DiSus-C chassis", paired with an attractive RM119,900 entry price and over 100 standard items across the range, makes it a formidable contender in the RM100,000 to RM150,000 all-electric SUV market.
